46 out of 100 citizens plan to go on summer vacation
Larger number of South Koreans plan to take summer vacation this year and they spend more than they did last year, a government survey showed Monday.
As many as 46 percent of the respondents said they are planning or highly likely to go on a summer vacation, according to the joint survey of 1,000 people commissioned by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Culture and Tourism Institute.
The figure was notably higher than last year, when a similar survey found 31 percent planning to hit the road.
Money was not the biggest reason for skipping a summer break. Forty-six percent of those without vacation tour cited lack of time, followed by the lack of money with 23 percent. Last year, those factors made up for 21 percent and 34 percent, respectively.
Those going on a trip planned to spend more than they did last year, with an average of 240,000 won ($197) to be spent per vacationer, compared to 165,000 won last year. Most will spend less than four days on vacation between late July and early August.
The government expects total travel expenses this summer will add up to 2.79 trillion won.
One-third of the respondents chose Gangwon Province as their favorite destinations, followed by South Gyeongsang Province with 13 percent, North Gyeongsang Province 12 percent and South Jeolla Province 11 percent. Only 5.6 percent of the respondents planned to travel abroad.
The telephone survey conducted by Gallup Korea had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percent and a 95 percent confidence level.

이번 여름휴가를 가려는 사람이 늘어났으며 작년보다 돈을 더 쓰겠다는 조사가 나왔다.
문화체육관광부와 한국문화관광연구원(원장 정갑영)가 한국갤럽에 의뢰해 국민 1천명을 대상으로 올 하계 휴가여행 계획을 설문조사한 결과 휴가를 다녀올 계획이 있거나 다녀올 가능성이 큰 응답자는 46%로 나타났다고 19일 말했다.
이는 작년 31퍼센트에 비하면 훨씬 높은 수치다.
휴가를 안가는 데 돈이 가장 큰 문제가 아니었다. 휴가여행을 가지 않겠다는 응답자는 그 이유로 여가시간 부족이46%로 제일 큰 문제였고 뒤이어 경제적 여유 부족(23%)을 들었다. 작년 이들 수치는 각각 21%, 34%였다.
휴가 기간 예상 지출액은 개별여행 1인 평균 총지출비용은 24만원 규모로 작년 165,000원에 비해 크게 올랐다.
여행 평균기간은 2.9일이며, 2박3일이 가장 많고(43.5%), 1박2일(29.6%), 3박4일(12.0%) 순이었으며 휴가 여행시점은 7월26일~8월1일(43.3%), 8월2일~8월8일(21.6%)이라는 응답이 많아 7월말~8월초에 여행객이 집중할 것으로 조사됐다.
이런 결과를 활용해 올 하계 휴가여행 총 지출액을 추정한 결과, 총 2조7천961억원의 관광비용이 지출될 전망이며 이로 인한 경제 효과는 생산 유발효과 4조8천694억원, 부가가치 유발효과 2조1천374억원으로 추정된다고 관광연구원은 덧붙였다.
시ㆍ도별 휴가 여행 목적지는 강원도(33.4%)라는 응답이 가장 많았고, 경남(13.2%)ㆍ경북(11.5%)ㆍ전남(11.1%)ㆍ충남(7.9%)이 뒤따랐다.
