Death penalty demanded for suspected child rapist
Prosecutors Wednesday demanded the death penalty for a suspect accused of raping and murdering a teenage girl, a case that has sparked public outrage.
Kim Kil-tae, 33, was arrested in March on charges of brutally raping and then killing a 13-year-old girl in the port city of Busan.
"The defendant has an attitude of defiance against criticism, and does not care about others' pain or sorrow. There is a high probability of him committing violent crimes against women," prosecutors read the statement. "The defendant needs to be separated or removed from society."
Prosecutors also demanded Kim wear an electronic monitoring device for 30 years, a maximum period for those convicted of a sex crime or murder under current law.
Although his DNA was found in the teenager's body and he confessed his crime during the police investigation, Kim repeatedly denied his charges at the trial.
The Busan District Court is scheduled to deliver a verdict on June 25.
