Border loudspeakers to be installed by Wednesday

South Korea will complete the installation of loudspeakers on Wednesday along the border with North Korea, although it was not yet decided when to resume anti-Pyongyang propaganda messages through them, the military said.

The military has been setting up the instruments since late May as part of the government's punitive measures against North Korea for sinking a South Korean warship in March.

"Installation of two loudspeakers were completed earlier today and installations of others will be completed by Wednesday," an official said. Some 100 loudspeakers are set to be in place by Wednesday.

No decision has been made on when the propaganda broadcasts would actually resume, the official said. FM radio broadcasts began late last month.

"The timing of using the loudspeakers will be decided after considering the circumstances," he said.

Tensions have mounted along the heavily-fortified Korean border after a team of multinational investigators concluded that the South Korean warship Cheonan was sunk in a North Korean torpedo attack on March 26. The deadly attack left 46 South Korean sailors dead.
