A British couple from Gloucestershire won 56 million pounds ($88 million) in the nine-country EuroMillions lottery, becoming the largest lotto winners in British history.

The heads of the National Lottery confirmed that 43-year-old Nigel Page and his partner Justine Laycock are one set of winners at a press conference in Bath.

The couple now has more money than Liam and Noel Gallagher (￡52 million each), Sir Michael Caine (￡45 million) and Madonna's ex-husband Guy Ritchie (￡50 million).The total 112 million pound jackpot was split between the couple and another winner in Spain.

The couple has decided to give up work and buy a new house and travel around the world with their three children.

If the entire fortune were banked, it would pocket them nearly ￡2.3 million in interest every year.

Nigel said, "I started shaking and couldn't speak. I just kept looking at it on the screen in front of me but I couldn't say a word.

"We went down to Waitrose and got some bacon rolls and we were sitting there at the table in silence. We couldn't even swallow, it was such a shock."

영국의 한 부부가 유럽 9개국에서 판매되는 복권인 `유로밀리언'에서 영국 역사상 가장 큰 금액인 5,600만 파운드 (8,800만 달러, 약 1,000억원) 복권에 당첨되었다.

영국 국립복권위원장은 기자회견에서 이 복권 당첨자가 43살의 니겔 페이지와 그의 아내 저스틴 레이콕이라고 발표했다.

이 부부는 각각 5,200만 파운드를 받은 리암, 노엘 갈라거, 4,500만 파운드의 마이클 케인, 그리고 5,000만 달러를 받은 마돈나의 전 남편 가이 리치 보다 더 부자가 되었다. 총 금액인 1억 1,200만 파운드는 스페인에 있는 한 당첨자와 나눠 갖게 되었다.

이 부부는 일을 그만두고 새 집을 살 것이며 세 자녀와 세계 여행을 다니기로 결정했다.

이들 가족은 총 금액을 은행에 보관할 경우 매년 230만 파운드의 이자를 받게 된다.

니겔은 "놀라서 떨리고, 말을 이을 수가 없다. 우리는 음식을 삼킬 수도 없었다. 엄청난 충격에 빠져있다"고 소감을 밝혔다.
