Child Prodigy Admitted for Shortened Doctorate Course

Korea's science and math prodigy Song Yoo-geun, 13, has been admitted to a comprehensive study course that will allow him to complete a master's and doctoral degree in a shortened period of time, school officials said Monday.

According to the officials at the state-sponsored University of Science and Technology (UST) located in Daejeon, Song recently applied for the school's shortened program and received approval from authorities there.

The course, which allows for a master's and doctoral degree to be completed in three years, accepts students who have completed two graduate school semesters with a 3.5 grade point average or higher, along with a professor's recommendation.

Song began studying at UST last February, majoring in astronomy and space science. His grades there were 4.21 and 4.39 during the first two semesters, outperforming the course's entrance qualifications, according to the officials.

Born in 1997, Song became a national figure and the focus of media attention when he completed the elementary, junior-high and high school curricula in just nine months, something that normally takes 12 years for most students.

He passed the nationwide qualification exam for middle school students in May 2005 and the high school exam in August of the same year.

한국의 과학과 수학의 신동 송유근(13)군이 석박사의 단축 과정으로 끝낼 수 있는 종합연구과정에 입학했다고 학교 당국이 월요일 밝혔다.

대전에 있는 이 과학기술 연합대학원 대학교(UST)에 따르면 송군은 최근 이 대학의 단축 프로그램에 응시 이곳 학교 당국으로부터 허락을 받았다.

3년에 끝내게 될 석박사 코스인 이 과정은 대학원 두 학기를 학점 평균 3.5 이상으로 마친 학생으로 교수의 추천에 의해 받허용된다.

학교당국에 따르면 송군은 천문학과 우주과학 전공을 위해 작년 2월 과학기술연합대학원대학교에서 공부를 시작했다. 송군의 학점은 두 학기 동안 4.21과 4.39점을 받아 이 코스 입학 자격을 상회했다.

1997년에 태어난 송군은 보통 대부분의 학생들이 초등학교, 중학교, 고등학교 과정으로 12년 걸릴 것을 9개 월 만에에 마쳐 전국적인 인물이 되고 언론의 조명을 받았다.

이 학생은 2005년 5월 중학생 검정고시에 합격했고 같은 해 8월 고등학교 검정고시에 합격했다.
