World’s Largest Book

The largest book in the world, which was made for the restoration of the monarchy, is to be opened up for public display for the first time in its 350 year history.

A Dutch merchant called Yohannes Klencke made the 6ft high atlas, which takes six men to lift, for the returning monarch in a bid to win favor with him in 1660.

Now it is to be one of the star attractions of a British Library exhibition, called ``Magnificent Maps: Power, Propaganda and Art.''

The atlas contains 39 maps, including those of the world's continents, Britain and other major European countries.

Peter Barber, who is in charge of the library's 4.5 million-strong map collection, said of the Klencke Atlas: "On one level it's a bribe; on another it's an intellectual conceit that it could encompass all the knowledge of the world in one book."

Barber said he hoped the exhibition would help broaden the perception of the purpose of maps.

세계 최대 책 350년 만에 공개

영국 박물관이 세계 최대의 책을 처음으로 일반에 공개할 예정이라고 영국 언론이 보도했다.

이 '클렌케 지도 (Klencke Atlas)'는 350년 전 네덜란드의 상인인 요하네스 클렌케가 만들어 영국 왕에게 선물한 책으로 높이가 1.75미터 펼친 너비가 1.9미터이며 6명이 함께 들어야 한다.

영국 및 주요 유럽 국가들의 지도를 포함해 총 39편의 지도로 이루어진 이 세계 지도책은 4월 박물관 전시회를 통해 공개될 예정이다.

박물관 지도의 관리 책임을 맡고 있는 피터 바버는 이 지도에 대해 ``어떤 면에서는 뇌물이지만 다른 측면에서는 책 한 권에 세상의 모든 지식을 담고 있는 지적인 자부심''이라면서 ``이번 전시회가 지도가 왜 필요한지를 절실히 느끼게 해줄 것''이라고 말했다.
