Girl Locked for a Year

A couple have been arrested for keeping their 12-year-old daughter locked in a wardrobe for over a year, the Daily Mail of the United Kingdom reported.

Alfredo Ines and his wife Leticia only allowed the girl out to attend school.

The young victim was not allowed to use the family bathroom and was given a bucket to keep in the cupboard.

Each morning she was forced to empty and clean out the bucket before being allowed to go to school.

On her return Mr. Ines, 43, and his 40-year-old wife locked her away in the cramped space at their home in West Brownsville, Texas.

Police said the girl, who has not been named and has now been placed in foster care, had to do her homework by light that seeped under the locked door.

The girl's brothers aged 11, 15 and 17 were aware of the mistreatment but said they were too afraid to report it to authorities.

Her abuse only came to light when one of the boys reported it to school officials.

When investigators arrived at the home, they found the girl so malnourished she looked like an eight-year-old.

Her parents told police they were forced to keep her locked up to stop her taking food from the fridge.

Police have yet to discover why the girl was singled out for abuse.

12살 소녀 옷장에서 1년 감금

미국에서 10대 소녀를 1년이 넘도록 옷장에 가둔 부모가 체포됐다고 영국 매체 데일리메일이 보도했다.

미국 텍사스주 웨스트브라운스빌 지역의 부부 알프레도 아인스 (43)와 레티샤 (40)는 12살 난 딸을 1년이 넘도록 옷장에 가둬 아동 학대 등의 혐의로 체포됐다. 이들은 딸이 학교에 갈 때만 나갈 수 있도록 했으며, 돌아오는 대로 옷장 안에 가뒀다.

딸이 생활하던 좁은 옷장 안에는 맨바닥에 이불이 깔려 있고 바로 옆에 하얀 양동이가 있다.

이 옷장 안에는 전등이 없어서 딸은 옷장 안으로 새어들어오는 불빛에 숙제를 해야 했다. 밤에는 화장실에 갈 수 없기 때문에 옷장 안에 있는 하얀 양동이를 사용했으며, 아침마다 이 양동이를 씻은 후 학교에 가곤 한 것으로 알려졌다.

이 일은 남자 형제가 학교의 친구에게 이야기를 하면서 알려지게 됐다.

이 부부는 딸이 냉장고에서 음식을 꺼내 먹지 못하게 하려고 옷장에 가뒀다고 말했지만, 경찰은 이름이 공개되지 않은 딸의 영양 상태가 불량해 마치 8살짜리처럼 보인다고 설명했다.

이 집에는 3명의 남자형제가 있지만, 왜 딸만 옷장에 가둬서 생활하는 학대를 받았는지는 알려지지 않았다. 경찰이 조사 중이다.

딸은 보호소로 옮겨졌고, 나머지 형제들은 다른 가족들과 지내고 있는 것으로 알려졌다.
