Governor Kim Tae-ho of South Gyeongsang Province announced Monday his decision not to run in the June 2 local elections.

The second-term governor, 49, is considered as one of the potential presidential candidates in the ruling camp to run in the 2012 election.

During a press conference, Kim said he was giving up the bid to seek reelection in order to give a chance to aspiring politicians who can better lead the province.

He declined to state the details of his decision, only saying that "it was a tough decision to make," causing him to spend many sleepless nights before making his mind up.

Asked if he would be interested in running in the 2012 presidential race, Kim responded by asking if there was anyone who would not dream of becoming president.

"The dream will only come true when (aspiring politicians) gain trust and credibility from the public," he said.

His remarks have been construed as an indication that he has dropped out of the race to prepare for his presidential bid.
