First Yellow Dust of Year Detected

This year’s first yellow dust was detected along the country’s West Coast, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration, Monday.

The dust flew in from Manchuria and other deserted regions of China and was discovered around 5 a.m. Monday at the level of 370 micrograms per cubic meter on Baekryeong Island in the West Sea.

The dust was also observed in Seoul and the Mt. Gwanak area as well as in Incheon and Jeju.

The weather agency said the occurrence of a yellow storm in January is quite unusual ― most of them are seen around March.

“Due to a strong continental anticyclone, the dry sand from the deserts was carried to Korea. The dust is expected to be present in the atmosphere throughout the day,” the KMA said.
