Fat-Burning Products Get Approved
A total of 27 products that allegedly help burn body fats were authorized by the Korea Food and Drug Administration for sale last year, the largest portion among 97 functional foods acknowledged, the food agency said.
Among the 27 granted products, 24 contained Garcinia Camboginia extract containing hydroxycitric acid (HCA), which is said to speed up metabolism and help in weight-loss diets. Many low-carbon diet regimes are said to inhibit the craving of carbohydrates.
Following the fat-burning products were functional foods for the liver, joints and bones, the prostate and large intestine. They contain Hovenia Dulcis Thund extract and other substances.
"Functional foods are diversifying as more are getting authorized to improve people's health. This reflects what people need at the moment," KFDA researcher Lee Hye-young said.
