Dashing Object Buzzing Earth

An unusual object, a little more than a small passing asteroid, will buzz the Earth around at 9:48 p.m. Wednesday in Korea Standard Time, it was reported Tuesday.

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory of the NASA said in its press release that it will be within a distance of around 130,000 kilometers at that time, when the object, named 2010AL30, is passing. The distance is less than one third of that between the Earth and the Moon. But it is very slim for the object to hit the Earth, it said. It is 15 meters thick.

The substance was discovered by astronomers Monday and was not clearly identified. According to Space.com, initial scientific assessment of the object's trajectory suggested it may actually be part of a derelict spacecraft, but NASA later confirmed it to be just a lump of rocky detritus hurtling onward through the galaxy.

The substance will not damage the Earth although it hits it, the Web site said, adding that it is wide 15 meters to the maximum.

Meanwhile, another asteroid, 2010AG30, is also approaching the Earth. The asteroid, 13 meters wide, is expected to pass the Earth in a distance of 1 million kilometers.

미국 항공우주국 제트 추진 연구소가 보도 자료를 통해 밝힌 바에 따르면, 2010 AL30과 지구의 거리는 약 13만 km가 될 것으로 보인다. 지구와 달의 거리에 비하면 1/3에 불과해 '근접 거리'라 할 수 있다. 지구와의 충돌 가능성은 극히 낮다.

월요일에야 그 존재가 알려지고 명명된 2010 AL30의 정체는 아직 명확하지 않다. 소행성일 수도 있고 우주 쓰레기일 가능성도 있는데, 현재로서는 전자일 가능성이 더 높다고 스페이스닷컴 등 외신들은 전했다. 2010 AL30의 너비는 최대 15m로, 지구와 충돌한다고 가정해도 피해는 없을 전망이다.

한편 금요일에는 소행성 2010 AG30이 지구에 접근한다. 너비는 13미터 정도인데 지구로부터 1백만km의 거리를 두고 지나갈 것으로 전해졌다.
