“Aliens Eat ‘Fatties’ First?” Gym Advert Controversial

One of Britain's biggest health clubs has been criticized as insensitive for putting up a sign warning overweight people that they would be eaten by aliens.

The sign, which features a green alien, read: "Advance health warning! When the aliens come, they will eat the fatties first."

"The alien campaign has been developed as a tongue in cheek look at the fact that people, generally, over the Christmas period do put on a little weight," Jason Eaton, manager at the health club, said.

"We do not intend to cause any offence to anyone."

But it prompted an angry reaction from some people in the local community, with residents saying it is offensive to those struggling with their weight.

A woman contacted the health club to complain after seeing an advert similar to the sign in a local newspaper. "I am not overweight yet I still find this extremely offensive and patronizing, but how much more so to someone genuinely overweight?," she said.

The club, which is one of the largest independent health clubs in the U.K., has two purpose-built studios along with a spa, salon and bistro. It employs a team of personal trainers and offers more than 100 fitness classes each week.

하지만 논란은 쉽게 사그라지지 않고 있다. 주민 대부분은 "과체중으로 고생하는 사람들에게 상처를 주는 문구"라며 우려의 목소리를 내고 있다.

한 여성은 지역 일간지에서 비슷한 광고를 보고 헬스클럽에 직접 항의하기까지 했다. 그녀는 "비만이 아닌 사람이 보기에도 상당히 불쾌하고 모욕적인 광고인데 비만인 사람은 어떻게 느끼겠는가"라고 비난했다.

캐드버리 하우스 호텔 헬스클럽은 온천탕과 미용실, 식당까지 구비한 영국에서 가장 큰 개인소유 스포츠센터 중 하나로, 개인 트레이너 다수를 고용하여 매주 100개가 넘는 피트니스 수업을 진행한다.
