Man Punished for Submittng False Evidence

The Gwangju District Court Tuesday handed down a suspended prison term to a man for trying to frame a civil servant after losing a bid to win a garbage disposal contract from a district office.

According to court records, the 45-year-old man, identified as Choi and the owner of a garbage disposal company, tried to claim that the contracting officer took bribes from him. Choi falsified his account books to make it look as if he paid 3.5 million won in gas for the public servant.

He submitted the account books to police while the civil servant was under investigation over bribery charges last May. After the public servant was cleared of the charges, the garbage firm owner was investigated. He was indicted by the prosecution for falsifying evidence.

Choi was sentenced to eight-month prison term, which was suspended for two years.

He made a bid for the contract at a district office, but after failing to win, he submitted the falsified account books to police, apparently believing he would win the deal if the civil servant were to get into legal trouble.
