US Gambler Blew $127 Million
A gambler who lost nearly $127 million in gambling has filed a lawsuit against casinos, saying casino staff routinely piled him with liquor and pain medication as part of a systematic plan to keep him gambling, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Nevada's Gaming Control Board has opened a separate investigation into whether Harrah's Entertainment Inc., the two casinos' parent company, violated gambling regulations, based on allegations made by Terrance Watanabe who lost $127 million during a year-long gambling binge at the Caesars Palance and Rio casinos in 2007.
The run is believed to be one of the biggest losing streaks by an individual in Las Vegas history. It devoured much of Mr. Watanabe's personal fortune, he says, which he built up over more than two decades running his family's party-favor import business in Omaha, Neb. It also benefitted the two casinos' parent company, Harrah's Entertainment Inc., which derived about 5.6% of its Las Vegas gambling revenue from Mr. Watanabe that year.
Terrance Watanabe, 52, is believed to have the biggest losing streak in Las Vegas history, losing $127 million in one year. Mr. Watanabe, who now lives in the Bay Area, stands near the entrance to Stanford University on Dec. 3, 2009.
Today, Mr. Watanabe and Harrah's are fighting over another issue: whether the casino company bears some of the responsibility for his losses.

WSJ에 따르면 네브래스카주 오마하에서 행사용 장식용품 수입업체를 경영하는 와타나베씨는 2007년에 라스베이거스의 시저스팰리스와 리오 카지노에서 도박에 빠져 1억2천700만 달러를 탕진했다.
일본에서 이민을 온 아버지가 세운 업체를 물려받아 20년 넘게 경영하면서 쌓은 부의 대부분도 도박으로 날아갔다.
그는 하룻밤에 500만달러를 날리기도 했고, 카지노 직원들에게 많게는 2천 달러까지 되는 100달러 지폐 뭉치를 뿌리기도 하는 등 카지노에서 돈을 물쓰듯했다.
그가 시저스팰리스와 리오 카지노에서 날린 돈은 두 카지노의 모회사인 해라스 엔터테인먼트가 그해 라스베이거스 도박에서 거둔 매출의 5.6%에 해당하는 거액이다.
현재 와타나베씨와 해라스는 송사를 벌이고 있다. 라스베이거스를 관할하는 클라크 카운티 검찰은 와타나베씨가 해라스에 1천470만 달러의 도박빚을 갚지 않은 것과 관련해 기소를 했고, 와타나베씨는 카지노 측이 술에 취한 상태에서도 자신이 도박을 계속하도록 만들었다며 해라스를 상태로 민사소송을 제기한 상태다.
