The late former President Kim Dae-jung will be remembered as one of Korea's greatest leaders who sacrificed himself for democracy, human rights and the reconciliation of South and North Korea, Prime Minister Han Seung-soo said in a memorial speech at Kim's state funeral, Sunday.
Han said Korea was able to become a global information technology (IT) powerhouse, thanks to Kim's passion and efforts to nurture the industry in the aftermath of the 1997-98 Asian financial crisis.
"You dedicated your life to democracy, human rights, peace and reconciliation of the two Koreas. The path you have taken, your work and your achievements will forever be part of the proud history of Korea," said Han, the chief funeral commissioner.
Kim opened the path for inter-Korean reconciliation, exchange and cooperation through the first-ever inter-Korean summit in 2000. He also raised Korea's international status by receiving the Nobel Peace Prize later that year, the prime minister said.
"Democratization, in particular, was possible because you were there with your unwavering convictions and your unyielding courage," Han said. "Your sacrifices, dedication and devotion allowed freedom, human rights and democracy to fully blossom in Korea, making our country today a proud and respected nation in the world."
When Korea received a bailout loan from the IMF to overcome the financial crisis, Kim took bold and decisive steps to reform the economy while at the same time striving to build a strong social safety net.
Today, Korea stands tall as a global IT powerhouse thanks to his passion and endeavor to become an "IT President," Han said.
"In particular, your deep interest and policy consideration for the underprivileged and marginalized neighbors are lessons we should continue to uphold," Han said. "Your passion for democracy, peaceful unification and social integration will be a guiding light as we continue our journey into the future."
