South Korea has offered $120,000 in financial aid in a bid to help Taiwan which was recently hit by a typhoon, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade on Saturday.
Typhoon Morakot has left 116 people killed, 59 missing and 45 injured in the Southeast Asian country, according to the Disaster Prevention Center in Taipei. About 18,000 people lost their homes.
South Korea established diplomatic ties with Taiwan in 1948, but the two then severed relations in 1992.
After ties were restored in 1993, a Taipei Mission, not an embassy, was established here.
More than 30 local companies such as Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are present in Taiwan.
