Former President Kim Dae-jung was reportedly in critical condition Sunday morning before key medical indicators stabilized, according to a close aide.
``He developed breathing difficulties and low blood pressure around midnight, but he is now in a stable condition,'' Kim's chief secretary Choi Kyung-hwan said in a briefing at the Severance Hospital in western Seoul.
``We are hoping for good news. Mrs. Lee Hee-ho is with him at the bedside,'' he added.
Despite the recovery, Kim's hospital team has been closely monitoring his condition at the intensive care unit.
The 85-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner has been hospitalized since July 13 with pneumonia. He was put on life support before receiving bronchial surgery on July 29.
The Democratic Party (DP) wished for the swift recovery of their spiritual leader. ``All DP members are greatly concerned over his illness,'' DP spokesman Roh Young-min said.
