Those convicted of kidnapping children must wear an electronic monitoring device from Saturday, the Ministry of Justice announced Thursday.
The law was enacted initially to keep track of those found guilty of sex crimes, but a revision was made to include those who kidnap minors.
According to the law, those abducting children for ransom must wear the anklet for up to 10 years after their release from prison.
Along with the location-tracking device, the law can also impose a curfew on kidnappers or ban their entry into specific areas.
Those wearing the device have to report their location to law enforcement officers when moving their residence or departing the country. They are subject to up to seven years in prison or 20 million won in fines if they attempt to remove the anklet or disturb its operation.
