Kim Dae-jung Doesnt Have Slush Funds

The prosecution has found that allegations about former President Kim Dae-jung's slush fund are groundless.

A prosecutor of the Supreme Prosecutors' Office said Friday that the prosecution will soon close its investigation into the allegation, as they have not found a link between Kim and certificates of deposit (CDs) worth 10 billion won Grand National Party lawmaker Joo Sung-young claimed belonged to Kim.

Last October, Joo disclosed copies of the CDs, saying he was tipped that they were the former President's slush funds. He claimed that the prosecution had obtained the CDs in 2006 but had not properly probed the allegation.

The prosecution has confirmed that the CDs were liquidated when they matured, but has not found evidence that they were Kim's.

Prosecutors summoned Joo Wednesday and requested him to tell who handed him the copies, saying they needed to question the whistleblower. Whether Joo told it or not was not known.

If the prosecution concludes that Kim has nothing to do with the CDs, it will then decide whether to take legal action against Rep. Joo, as Kim filed a defamation suit against him.
