S. Koreas Sex Industry Shows Signs of Dwindling
With prolonged police crackdown on Seoul’s most well-known red-light district, an increasing number of brothel operators are either scrapping their business or shifting to other businesses, Yonhap News reported Saturday.
Since the police clampdown on the sex industry began on Seoul’s Jangan-dong area July 28, the authorities have identified 195 people, which include both owners of illicit sex-service venues and customers. Among them, seven were indicted. The police also confiscated bath tubs, beds and sex accessories, weighing some 150 tons.
Some owners of brothels, which normally disguise as massage parlors, threatened to reveal the names of the “corrupt” police officers who had received bribes from them. That didn’t sway the police will.
A police officer, quoted by Yonhap, said the crackdown is “yielding good results” and said “the police clamp-down will continue.”
