Seoul to Light Half of Street Lamps

Seoul City has decided to turn off half of its street lamps in order to save electricity.
About 90 percent of the lamps on pedestrian roads; 36 percent on vehicle roads and 20 percent on ordinary roads will remain off at nighttime from Wednesday, it said.
Residential areas will stay fully lit at nighttime for safety.
The bridges across the Han River will also be put on an energy diet. Those decorated with flashy lights from 8:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. will have their time cut by three hours.
The streets and cars will be streamlined as more than 1,000 hybrid cars will be provided to municipal organizations and traffic lights will also be replaced with light emitting diode devices. Some 670 million won per year is aimed be saved through the program.
A City Hall official said the city will launch a drive to save energy.
