Overseas Elementary Students Double

The number of elementary school students going abroad to study at English-speaking countries has doubled in the past two years despite the government's efforts to promote English education at public schools.
In 2007, a total of 15,237 children from elementary and middle schools left Korea, compared to 7,090 in 2005. Most studied overseas for six months or longer, according to the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education.
The departure of those in primary schools has shown a two-fold increase each year since 2005. It rose to 8,298 in 2007 up from 2,453 in 2005. Middle school students showed a moderate increase from 2,520 in 2005 to 4,379 last year. However, the number of high school students studying overseas is falling. Peaking at 3,466 in 2006, the figure dropped to 2,560 last year.
The government says the notable increase in primary school students proves Korean parents believe studying overseas at an early age increases their child's chances of gaining admission to selective secondary schools and ultimately leading universities in Korea.
``Most of them stay abroad for less than two years,'' an education official said. ``Many parents believe studying overseas at an early age will help their children gain successful admission to a distinguished high school here.''
The United States was the most sought-after destination for students.
``One out of four students went to America to study,'' the official said. ``Meanwhile, a growing number of high school students are leaving for China as its international influence is getting stronger.''
