Blogger Sued by Police

Police have filed a defamation lawsuit against an Internet user for posting photos and personal information about riot policemen who allegedly used violence on protestors during an anti-U.S. beef imports demonstration.

The case is stirring debate over the law, which acknowledges that the spreading of facts ― as well as false rumors ― can constitute defamation.

The blogger, in his 30s, said Wednesday on the portal site Daum that police want to question him as several officers are suing him for posting their photos and names on the site. The photos showed them using violence against protestors.

According to the law, those who defame others by making private information public face a maximum two years in prison or a fine of 5 million won. The blogger claimed the law was unreasonable. ``Through my writing, ralliers can recognize and avoid violent policemen and those policemen can refrain from violent acts. People should be allowed to spread facts when they can help people fight the authorities,'' he said.
