UN Chief to Visit Seoul Next Month

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will visit South Korea on July 3 to meet President Lee Myung-bak and senior government officials, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said Tuesday.

The visit is part of Ban's Asian tour that will also bring him to Japan and China, the ministry said in a press release. He will participate in the Group of 8 summit slated for July 7-9 in Japan.

It is the first time for Ban, a former South Korean foreign minister, to pay an official visit to his home country since his inauguration in January 2007.

During his five-day stay in Seoul, he will receive an honorary doctorate in diplomacy from Seoul National University, his alma mater.
