Yi Sun-sin Chosen as English Name of Admired Admiral

South Gyeongsang Province has chosen "Yi Sun-sin," as the Romanized spelling of the nation's most admired admiral.

His name has been spelled in various ways ― Lee Sun-shin, Yi Sun-shin and Yi Sunshin. The standardization is part of the provincial government's globalization project involving the Joseon Kingdom (1392-1910).

Born in 1545, Yi saved his country from numerous Japanese invasions until he died in a marine battle in 1598. With his heroic victories and achievements, he is one of the most respected historical figures in Korea.

With the standardized spelling, the regional government will promote Yi's achievements internationally as one of the nation's iconic heroes.
