Citizens will receive 10,000 won in reward from Thursday for every first report of a malfunctioning traffic light to the authorities in charge.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced the new decision Wednesday.

The city government will additionally reward those who report who caused the damage to the traffic lights. The reward will be up to 5 percent of the total repair costs.

The city government came up with the new measure to quickly cope with the malfunction of traffic lights.

``We have about 40 patrol vehicles in operation with 100 repairmen on duty 24 hours a day. But it is still hard to check out 55,000 traffic lights installed all over the city,'' a city official said.

The reward will be given within 15 days. But the new measure has a quota _ one citizen is allowed to get a maximum of 200,000 won per month and one who reports someone who causes damage can get the maximum of 3 million won per year.

Malfunctioned traffic lights under repair will have a sign of ``under repair'' to prevent repeated reports.

The report can be made to the city's call center at (02) 120, the police call center at 112 or the traffic operation center at (02) 720-3838.
