Korea will build a school for immigrant children by 2009. According to Migrant Worker’s House, it will set up an elementary school to care for children of immigrant families and gradually establish middle and high schools as well.
Under the plan, the volunteering organization has already launched the school foundation committee and secured the necessary funds for the site in Gyeonggi Province.
The school will accommodate some 180 students who are children of public officials from developing countries and those of foreign companies here as well as mixed children. Classes will accommodate roughly 30 students. In the event that more enroll, the school will consider raising the quota. The education provided by the school will be free.
Although a growing number of migrant workers are coming to Korea, there haven’t been any schools for their children and many of them have failed to adapt to local schools. Currently, there are almost 1 million migrant workers in Korea.
