Get in Shape for Summer

The sun is sizzling a bit early this year, but not to worry ― there are various ways to cool off the heat, one being a visit to the beach or water parks scattered around the country. But before you prepare for summer fun, it might be necessary to check your bathing suits.
Bikinis will continue to dominate the pool and beach scene, and The Korea Times takes readers through a useful workout for the perfect bikini-body and also the current trends of swimwear.
Workout for Bikini Body
Because the bikini accentuates the whole bodyline, a total workout of the body is required.
``The bikini is all about the silhouette of the body as you have to reveal more than one-piece bathing suits. Thus, the core is the trunk, or the middle part of your body. You have to work on your whole body, not just your arms and legs,'' said Shine Jung, a personal trainer at Marquis, the thermal spa and fitness club at JW Marriot Seoul.
1.
The first step to the perfect bikini body is stretching. Spread the legs front to back then stretch the arms over the head as far as possible and also the sides of the torso. Hold for five minutes.
``It's important to stretch as much as you can. That way, even your arm muscles are stimulated at the same time,'' Jung said.
2.
The next is dumbbells. Hold the dumbbells in each hand, start at the squat position with hands parallel to the chin. After holding for five seconds, rise and twist the torso, stretching one arm upward. Continue in the opposite direction for 15 to 20 times.
3.
The third routine is a bit more complicated, as not only do you have to balance on a gym ball, but also focus on stretching all the muscles as much as possible. Balance yourself on your stomach, hands touching the side of your head and hold for five seconds. Then arch your back as much as possible, still balancing on the ball.
``Although this workout works on all muscles, it especially helps toward a slimmer back. For beginners, you can start by resting your feet against a wall as it will help you balance. Remember to focus on your stomach and back at all times,'' Jung reminded. This routine also helps tighten the muscles on the thighs and hips, two areas where women are sensitive about, with or without plans for a bikini.
4.
Now bring back the dumbbells. Position yourself in a lunge, hold, and then rise with your legs far apart. Slightly tilt to the side until you feel your side strain, hold for five seconds and continue to the opposite side. This is especially good for the lower part of the body, from the abdomen, hips to the thighs.
``Because the abdomen is revealed when wearing the bikini, it is important to keep it well toned,'' Jung said.
5.
Now bring out a yoga mat and place your forearms parallel to the ground. Lift your body with your arms and feet, and try to keep your torso parallel to the floor. Hold for five seconds and lift your hips in a mountain-like position. Keep in mind that the back and legs should be straight and the arms should be positioned a shoulders width apart.
6.
With one leg kneeling, stretch the other upfront right under your head and position your arms down on the floor a shoulders width apart. Stretch the un-kneeling leg as straight as possible, stimulating the muscles behind your thighs. Hold for five seconds.
``You can get faster and more effective results if you run on a treadmill for about 30 minutes after this routine,'' Jung added.
The trainer also stressed that these routines must be carried out consistently, as it takes time to tone up muscles.
Glamour, Freedom and Journeyer
This year's trend for swimwear is ``glamour,'' ``freedom'' and ``journeyer,'' according to swimsuit brand Arena.
``For young and fearless women, we have prepared glamorous styles with bright and shiny materials, along with animal prints and more provocative shapes. Good use of accessories can also help you get the glamour look,'' the recent report for Arena's new summer line said.
For the free spirit, Arena advises to go with something bold, yet girly like stripes, flower prints and even pop art.
People who enjoy visiting exotic places may find it easier to find the perfect swimsuit, as the brand suggests an easy-going and practical look for the journeyers.
``Looking natural is key. Loose and fluffy accessories like sundresses and cover-ups can help you look natural, while still going for the journeyer look,'' the report said.
Sportswear brand Adidas advises to first know your body shape, and instead of merely following the trends, find something that fits you but still manages to keep you in style.
``Of course, it's impossible to hide your weakness with a small bikini, but with the right choices, you can feel confident and also have fun without having to worry about your body,'' and Adidas summer report said.
A Quick Guide to Find the Perfect Bikini Just For You
Busty
Try simple styles in dark colors.
Thick neck straps and halter necks will visually make your breasts look smaller.
Large buckles or other large decorations near the breasts can also downsize your assets.
Smaller Chest
Choose bikini tops that have the ``volume-up'' feature or come with extra pads or wires.
Ruffles, floral prints and other decorations on the chest area can also help.
A halter neck is a great way to accentuate the breasts as it tends to pull them up for a more voluptuous cleavage.
Too Slim
Feel free to choose even the wildest designs in bright and warm colors.
Choose a more round-necked piece as it will soften your skinny and sharp image.
A bottom with a thick waistband that can compliment your slim figure without making you look too skinny.
Full Figured
Instead of wearing oversized dresses and shirts to cover up that extra weight, be bold and try out a well fitting one-piece.
Cold and dark colors like blue or black will help you look a bit thinner.
Instead of over-the-top designs and prints, keep it simple.
Sharp and plunging necklines can make you look taller and leaner.
If you need more height, distract the attention to the upper part of the body with ribbons, vertical stripes and small, cute prints. For those who have a thicker waistline, choose a colorful swimsuit with prints instead of solid colored ones.
Considering the recent heat wave, many pools and water parks have opened their gates, offering guests a splash under the sizzling sun a few days earlier than usual.
The Imperial Palace and Shilla hotels are already welcoming pool guests, while water parks Caribbean Bay and Ocean World opened early this month.
