Shim Hyun-chul, The Korea Times photographer, won a Korea Press Photographers Association (KPPA) award Monday, with his photo of the late Keangnam Enterprises Chairman Sung Wan-jong published in the April 9 edition of the paper.
Of six award-winning photographs this month, Shim's photo, titled “The Last Bow,” won in the “Best People in the News” category.
In the photo, Sung is pictured bowing during a press conference at the Korea Federation of Banks building in central Seoul on April 8 as he denies allegations that he was involved in embezzlement and influence-peddling during the Lee Myung-bak administration.
A day after the conference, Sung hung himself on Mount Bukhan, making the photograph one of his last official appearance. He left behind a list of names he claimed received money from him, and that resulted in former Prime Minister Lee Wan-koo’s resignation only 63 days after he was sworn in.
Along with Shim's photo, the KPPA also honored photographers in five other categories, including Park Jong-sik of the Hankyoreh newspaper for his photo of laid-off workers.
