Marilyn Monroe

Inje County in Gangwon Province is establishing a monument in commemoration of the late Hollywood actress Marilyn Monroe (1926-62), who visited the area shortly after the Korean War to perform for U.S. soldiers.

It will be set up in front of Inje Cathedral where the actress performed in February 1954.

The monument will have a picture of Miss Monroe performing at the time, together with an account of her visit.

The actress had tied the knot with Joe DiMaggio, the American Major League Baseball player, in January 1954 and was in Japan for their honeymoon, when she was asked by an officer there to perform for the soldiers in Korea.

She visited Inje a month later and performed on a makeshift stage behind the cathedral.

The actress was in Korea for four days and held around 10 performances in Inje, Dongducheon, Seoul and Daegu.
