Twin brothers received doctorate degrees in biochemical engineering at the nation’s top science research and educational institution.

The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) said Sunday that Kim Dae-ok and his brother Kim Dae-woo, 29, graduated from its doctorate courses in biochemical engineering on Friday.

The brothers said it was good to study together.

“While living and studying with my brother, we could share information about each other’s specific expertise and … conduct joint research. It was a great pleasure to do so,” Kim Dae-ok said.

“I think I could overcome difficulties while studying thanks to my brother,” Kim Dae-woo said. “We also could build up a stronger brotherhood while we were researching together at KAIST.”

The twins both finished majoring in biochemical engineering as undergraduate studies at KAIST in 2009. Kim Dae-ok continued to study the subject and received a master’s degree in 2010.

He then entered the Energy, Environment, Water and Sustainability Research Center at KAIST for the doctoral degree and studied the same subject under the theme, “Investigation on the behaviors of gas molecules in water-filled nanopores: Applications to energy and environmental technology.”

Kim Dae-woo studied biochemical engineering in the combined master’s and doctorate program in KAIST.

In the meantime, Kim Dae-woo wrote a doctoral thesis themed, “Direct visualization of large-area domains of two dimensional materials by using optical birefringency.”

In addition, he also authored more than 25 articles for globally renowned academic journals including Nature Nanotechnology, and won a prize with his thesis submitted to a competition organized by Samsung Electronics.

After graduation, Kim Dae-ok said he plans to research gas hydrate and porous materials at KAIST’s Energy and Environmental System Lab for a year and continue his research in the United States afterwards.

Kim Dae-woo said he will research structural control of graphene and second-dimensional materials at a KAIST laboratory and plans to continue researching the subject at a U.S. university.
