Kim Chul-kyun, former presidential secretary for new media affairs, was named vice president of the social commerce website Coupang.

“His experiences in various careers will make Coupang a more innovative company,” the company said Tuesday.

A Coupang spokeswoman said his precise role has yet to be determined.

The 52-year-old served as a presidential secretary for new media affairs from July 2008 to September 2011. Prior to that, Kim assumed decision-making positions at several information technology companies, including Daum Communications, which is now renamed Daum Kakao after merging with mobile messenger service provider Kakao Talk last year.

Industry observers expect Kim to come up with measures to ensure the company’s sustainable growth.

In December, the company attracted foreign investment worth $300 million from a group of U.S. investors.

Born in 1963, Kim earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Yonsei University in Seoul.
