Renowned film director Im Kwon-taek, 78, was conferred an award for his contributions to cinema at the Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF).

The veteran director, acknowledged for his lifelong involvement in the Asian film industry, was named the first recipient of the SGIFF Honorary Award at the Silver Screen Awards Presentation, Saturday. The SGIFF described Im as one of Korea’s most respected and prolific directors who has made more than 100 films over a long and active career.

“I thank the SGIFF for giving me the chance to screen my movies here in Singapore, and for this generous award,” Im said.

The SGIFF, founded in 1987, is Singapore’s longest-running film event with the aim of showcasing international films. The festival, which took place from Dec. 4 through 14, introduced the Honorary Award to recognize those who have made lasting contributions to Asian Cinema.

Im’s directorial premiere was with the 1962 film, “Farewell to the Duman River,” and in the 1960s and 70s, Im focused on directing popular genre films.

His career’s turning point came with the 1981 film “Mandala” and his work has since won prestigious awards and garnered international acclaim. His 2000 film “Chunhyang” became the first Korean film to compete at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2007, Im announced the release of his 100th film “Beyond the Years,” a sequel to his 1993 film “Sopyonje.”
