Korean pop sensation Psy’s worldwide hit “Gangnam Style” took the best video award at the 2012 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA) Sunday.
He is the first Korean singer to win a main prize at one of the major music awards outside the United States.
At the 19
th
annual MTV EMA at the Festhalle in Frankfurt, Germany, he thanked his fans and family.
"I would like to thank each of everyone around the world supporting Gangnam Style, and thanks so much for all the great support from Korea. I also thank my wife who married a selfish man six years ago,” said Psy. He left the stage, shouting “thank you” in Korean.
The chubby 34-year-old rapper rose to stardom with music video “Gangnam Style,” which had more than 700 million hits on YouTube as of Monday. If this trend continues much longer, “Gangnam Style” may break the record set by Justin Bieber’s “Baby,” world’s most-viewed video on YouTube with 798 million views as of Monday.
Psy was also certified by Guinness World Records for “Most Likes on YouTube” with 2,141,758 last month, and the figure is now over 5 million. Meanwhile, the Recording Industry Association of America said Saturday that his single is a double platinum hit, selling over 2 million digital singles in the U.S.
The rapper will go to Los Angeles to attend the American Music Awards on Nov. 18, and will appear on NBC talk show, “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” on Nov. 22, Thanksgiving Day.
