A Korean mathematics professor has been appointed a tenured professor at an Austrian university, the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) said Wednesday.
Kang Mi-hyun, 38, a professor at the department of mathematical sciences at KAIST, was appointed as a full professor at the Graz University of Technology in Austria, one of the most prestigious schools in the European country.
It is the first time for a member of KAIST’s math department to be named a tenured professor at a foreign university, according to KAIST.
Kang received her master’s and doctoral degrees from the department of mathematical sciences at KAIST in 2001 after graduating from Jeju National University’s department of mathematics education.
She studied in Germany after receiving her doctoral degree and was selected as a Heisenberg fellow in 2008 at a research center there.
Kang will head a research center on discrete mathematics at the Graz University of Technology.
