Celebrities Lead Haiti Quake Charity Drive

Tiger Woods plans to help with relief efforts in earthquake- stricken Haiti, the president of the Tiger Woods Foundation said Friday.

Greg McLaughlin said the foundation staff was evaluating “the most appropriate role” to help the Haitian people.

“Our plan is be part of the relief effort to help rebuild Haiti by supporting organizations that provide critical resources to young people, which is consistent with our mission and previous efforts regarding Hurricane Rita, Hurricane Katrina and the 2004 tsunami,” McLaughlin said in a statement.

Woods’ foundation gave $100,000 to tsunami relief efforts in 2004 through Give2Asia, with the money directed toward two groups providing sanctuary and relief to children.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were the first to reach out to Haiti by donating $1 million from their foundation to Doctors Without Borders, which has been tending to victims of the quake.

Madonna said Friday that she has donated $250,000 toward Haitian earthquake relief ? and she encouraged her fans and friends to match her.

“I urge all of my friends and fans around the world to join me collectively to match my contribution or give in any way you can,” she said. “We must act now.” Sandra Bullock donated $1 million toward Haitian earthquake relief.

Bullock’s contribution went to Doctors Without Borders’ emergency operations in Port- Au-Prince.

“I wanted to ensure that my donation would be used immediately to meet the needs of the Haitian people affected by this catastrophic event,” said Bullock in a statement.

MTV Networks is working with George Clooney to stage a telethon for Haitian earthquake relief.

MTV spokesman Mark Jafar said Thursday that details are still being worked out.

There’s no word yet about other stars getting involved. But Clooney representative Stan Rosenfield said the actor is in the process of helping organize the telethon, which likely would air Jan. 22 on all MTV Networks ― which include VH1, Comedy Central and CMT ― as well as on ABC, NBC, HBO and CNN.

Gisele Bundchen has donated $1.5 million to the Haiti earthquake relief effort, reports said Friday.

People magazine quoted a source close to Bundchen ― the highest paid model in the world with annual earnings of around $35 million ― as saying she was “so moved, she knew what she had to do to help.” Bundchen, 29, who is married to American football star Tom Brady, wrote a check for $1.5 million on Thursday to the Red Cross Haitian relief fund, People reported.

Latina pop singer Shakira asked her fans for donations to help rebuild Haiti to be channeled through UNICEF and Jean’s foundation.

Actor Ben Stiller, who has been raising money for a school in Ceverine in Haiti through Save the Children, also made an appeal on CNN’s “Larry King Live” for $10 donations charged to phone bills by texting “Haiti” to 90999.

Cycling legend Lance Armstrong’s LiveStrong Foundation pledged $250,000 to help Haiti's recovery, according to its Web site.
