A total of 224 contestants participated in the competition in two categories; one for those who have studied overseas and one for those who haven't.
The contest panel, consisted of 20 native English speakers, awarded Grand Prizes to two children, Yoon Jung-one, 12, of Sinseo Elementary School and Lee Soo-young, 8, of Chunggu Elementary School, in Seoul. One panel member said winners were selected after reviewing their English proficiency.

By Yoon Jung-one Sinseo Elementary School In the universe, there are so many planets and stars that cover the dark sky. Beyond all, Earth gleams and shines most. That beautiful Earth contains a little dot at the end of Asia. Though Korea is small and perhaps not noticeable, in my heart, it is bigger and better than the Earth itself. In the morning, the sun shakes me with hope and ambition. The blazing sun melts yesterday's problems and sprouts aspiration for today. Like the burning sun, Korea presents me with a new day and another wish. It is my past, present, and future. What makes Korea special? It is not enormous, fertile land, or fantastic civilization, nor natural resources like oil. The heroes that make Korea special are our ancestors, us, and our descendents. Our ancestors handed us politeness, the will to work hard, and the ability to save money. We are studying hard to make more technology and make Korea a better country. Our descendents will grow Korea and make it a greater nation yet. If someone asked me what I could tell others about Korea, I would not wait another second to say that it has the great power of development. Smart Koreans fostered brilliant growth in all sectors such as economy, technology, arts, and many more in a very fast time. Now, however, such quick development has created a problem. Parents began to think faster equals better. They started skipping stages of teaching morality, ways to respect others, but only put in knowledge to their children before they can even walk! These babies grow up to be emotionless and just become monsters with huge amounts of knowledge. As a result, Korea became the country with the smartest people but also became the country with the most suicides. If a sword goes into an evil hand, it can be used as a violent weapon, but if the sword goes into a great hand, it can be used as a tool to take care of the citizenry. A person that gains the combination of enough love and intelligence is healthy and pure A home that is made of those people is sweet. And, the society that is built from those families is strong. If Korea is created by a strong society, Korea will soon be a country that is not a place we have to live, but a place people all over the world would want to live.
By Lee Soo-young Chunggu Elementary School Wow! To my great joy, I'm an invisible girl! If I were invisible, I would rush to the playground and make the children surprised and shocked. How? First, I would ride a swing and I would rock the swing hard. Then many children would be surprised because there's no one, but the swing is moving by itself. How frightening! Also, I would kindly play and talk to the children. But they'd probably say, ``Oh, my goodness! It's a ghost ! Mama!!! Ahhhhh!!!!!!!!!!" This would be enough to make my feet tap in delight! It would be terrifying but funny as well. My tricks would not stop here! When I got home, I'd even trick my mom and dad. When my mom made food, I would eat it all. ``Hey ! who ate it ? Maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me!" She would say in bewilderment. If my mom didn't sleep and watched TV, I would go sit next to her and chuckle with her. And if my dad wanted to smoke, I would blow the fire out. Finally my dad would stop smoking. Yeah! If my dad watched a sports program on TV, I would turn it off. My dad would even stop watching TV, too! Everything would change to what I want. It would be fantastic! I would want to be an invisible girl only when I need to. It would allow me to release my stress. What an awesome opportunity !!! Thank you for listening!
