Animals are widely compared to explain human’s life and destiny since ancient days. It is quite interesting to learn how humans are portrayed by the ecology of animals’ habits.

For example, they often appear in the myths, especially related with the birth of a nation. The myth of Dangun, legendary founding father of Gojoseon (2333 B.C.-108 B.C.), tells the story of a tiger and a bear. They were ordered by the son of Heaven, Hwanwoong, who had a will to rule the human world, to eat only garlic and wormwood inside a cave for a 100 days in order to be reincarnated as a human. The bear endured the long and dark days with the spicy and bitter food, while the tiger was impatient to jump out into the open air. The bear became a woman, who married Hwanwoong to conceive Dangun later on.

It is the birth myth of Korea. This story implies that the Korean people are chosen by Heaven. The bear symbolizes one with honesty and tenacity, which represents Korean national character.

The animal characters are more saturated into ordinary people’s life. There are 12 zodiac animals to signify various human personality, time and folklore faith. Each year has its own animal sign, and the same applies to the 12 months and hours.

The beginning of each month is regulated by the seasonal divisions, neither by the lunar nor by the western solar calendars. So the exact dates are not consistent every year. February is considered as a beginning of spring and it has the sign of the tiger.

While the month starts with the tiger, most people perceive that the zodiac animals start with the rat and end with the pig. It was originated by a folktale of Buddhism. In the beginning, Buddha invited animals and certified the 12 early comers. The cow who was diligent and knew that he was not fast, departed earlier than any other animals. The canny rat furtively rode on the cow and tactfully passed the finish line before the cow. So he became the first zodiac animal.

The other animals reveal their own natures individually, which became an interesting clue to elucidate personalities of humans born in each year, month and hour. The year zodiacs represent one’s exposed inclination. The born month affects one’s inner self and the born hours characterize one’s secret signs.

If you learn more about each animal’s nature depicted in zodiac signs, you will get a lot of information about human life and relations. For example, those who have rabbit signs are placid and introvert. They want to be a perfectionist but easily become depressed and indifferent to others.

There are some indications about how two people are incompatible by the relationship of two animals. People of the rabbit and the monkey years are not congruous because the sleepy rabbits are plagued with the noisy monkeys. Meantime the monkeys do not like the rabbits who have same pinky ears as the color of monkey’s buttocks. The numinous dragons dislike pigs because they have similar noses while the pigs are envious of dragon ball. The Cows work hard while they think the horses don’t. The horses that sleep standing up, hate the cows as they lie asleep. This became a taboo when people arranged a match since old days till now.

The cat may substitute for the rabbit and the elephant for the pig in some other Asian countries subject to their own totem.
