(145) PyeongChang

By Janet Shin

PyeongChang has become the most popular keyword for Koreans after the announcement last week at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) session in Durban, South Africa that it will host the 2018 Winter Games.

I received several calls asking me how I view the PyeongChang’s winning bid.

Well, I understand the prying eyes and ears of the public and it is not odd for me to get inquiries about the destiny of a current president or who will be the next president among the currently noted candidates. I even got an inquiry from an Indian reader asking me to read the saju of a famous Indian actress whom he was fascinated with.

However, reading the saju of individuals and reading certain events or the fortune of a year or a country are different. For example, if hundreds of people died in a plane crash, would it mean that the saju of all those victims had the dark shades of death? Likewise, disasters such as great earthquakes must be seen by an appropriate viewpoint of saju.

“Will I live long?” is still one of the most frequently asked questions by my clients. Of course, I can see how healthily one may enjoy one’s life, and if not, what can be the possible disease one may suffer from, but I decline to answer such questions.

And yet, I still read the destiny of a country and the yearly fortune, sometimes by studying the five element combinations of stem and branch of the year or through feng shui or the face reading of relevant leaders.

Now let’s go back to PyeongChang. Was the victory caused by someone’s specific fortune? As you may guess, my answer is no. But we could embark on a search for correlations.

Among many articles, one caught my eyes, “How lucky the newly-elected Gangwon governor, Choi is, and how unlucky the former governor, Lee Kwang-jae is. Many other articles wrote a lot about Kim Yu-na, a figure skater and 2010 Olympic champion and Theresa Rah, a former journalist and communications director of the PyeongChang bid committee. If PyeongChang achieved a victory now, why not during the past decade?

We may be able to find some coincidences by looking at the saju of these people and their yearly fortune. Here are the saju of the current governor, Choi, the former governor, Lee, and Kim Yu-na. Although I didn’t put the saju of current president Lee, his day master is yin metal born in a water month. His saju has the flow of energy from metal to water. The metal and water imply coldness, fluidity and the season from fall to winter. I read saju of many winter sport athletes and most of them have either metal or water day masters.

Reading the saju below, you will see that all were born with either metal or water elements. While former Gangwon Governor Lee was born in a wood month, which actually generates warm energy along with the fire next to it, all else has coldness in their month branches too. Current Governor Choi was born in the month of yin earth (cow), which indicates a cold and wet earth, at the end of water trine months (pig-rat-cow). Former Governor Lee could have experienced adversities in his political career because of the penalty between wood and fire of his month and year branch, but his career path will recover shortly next year.

During the past by-election campaign for governorship, I foresaw the winning of Choi, partly because of his day master and the knowledge stars. On the other hand, his competitor, Eom, has a fire day master with strong expression stars around. When a saju master reads destiny, either of an individual or an event, he or she must have an insight to read not only the microscopic factors but to analyze the whole picture of circumstances.

Now, if we analyze the yearly fortune, 2018 would be a year in between metal and water elements. The metal ripens itself and stores its energy to strengthen the energy of water.

We were able to predict whether PyeongChang could host the 2018 Winter Games. It was a splendid achievement as we had waited enough time to ripen, and many people worked together in one accord, not just because of one person’s saju.

It is just a starting point. The more important factor lies in whether it fulfills the event successfully, which cannot be forejudged by the saju of those listed here.
