Prof. Noh Jung-il, Prof. Bae Enu-jung and Prof. Kim Woong-ha of Seoul National University Hospital performed a defibrillation on a two-year-old arrhythmia patient for the first time in Korea on April 27, the hospital said Friday.
The patient, identified as Jeong, suffered from breathing problems since he was three days old and was diagnosed with long QT syndrome (LQTS), involving arrhythmia, an irregular pulse stemming from the heart condition. People with the syndrome tend to live a normal life, but great stress, intense exercise, noise or other stimulation can result in heart attack or some other symptoms of arrhythmia.
Jeong received the treatment and was successfully resuscitated.
Performing defibrillation to a 9.6 kilogram-child with a risk of heart arrest opened a new door for other LQTS patients, Noh said.
