Dandruff is a problem for many people and can become worse especially with drastic changes in temperature and weather.
The white flaky matter is generally associated with poor hygiene, however, the main cause of dandruff is the excessive shedding of dried skin cells on the scalp.
For some it can be the cause of social and self esteem problems, while others may worry about going bald.
However, dandruff exists even after hair loss. According to Dr. Seo Dong-hye of ANA clinic, even bald people can get dandruff because it is skin related. ``What you need is to take care of your scalp,'' she said.
Here are some tips one can take, provided by Dr. Seo.
1. Dry type scalp:
If you don't get a lot of oil buildup in your hair, even several days after washing your hair, you may have a dry scalp. In this case the skin does not produce much oil, or sebum, which could lead to dandruff. This also causes an itchy scalp.
Tips: Moisturize your scalp. Use hair conditioner at least once a week and wash your hair once every two days. Do not use a hair dryer if possible.
Do not use excess amounts of ``deep cleansing shampoo,'' or mix it with regular ones. When washing hair, don't use hot water rather use warm. Hot water will make your hair even drier.
2. Oily scalp:
If your hair feels greasy when brushing, you have an oily scalp. In this case, dandruff is bigger, sticky and yellowish.
Tips: Wash hair once or twice a day. Use deep cleansing shampoo and use a wide brush. Try to massage your scalp with water. Do not use too much conditioner. Use organic shampoo. Try to avoid contact with the scalp when shampooing.
3. Sensitive scalp:
When your scalp is too sensitive, your hair falls out easily and the scalp gets swollen and turns red. The roots of the hair get weaker, which makes the hair thinner and less elastic.
Tips: Use organic shampoo and refrain from steam towel massages or scalp massages. Dry your scalp right after washing your hair. Do not dye your hair or get perms. Avoiding the sauna is also recommended. Soak tissues with green tea and dab the scalp with it. It soothes the scalp and eases inflammation.
