How to Keep Your Teeth Healthy

Having clean and healthy teeth is very important, however, keeping them in good condition is quite difficult.
The average Korean in 2004 had 3.25 cavities, with the number being the highest among the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development countries.
Dr. Jung Hak of Family Dental Clinic says dental problems can be prevented by brushing properly and regularly. ``It all comes down to brushing properly. Although brushing for three minutes, up to three times day is important, what is more important is following the right steps,'' he said.
Here are several tips on brushing teeth.
1. Choose the right toothpaste:
Some toothpastes have a higher percentage of abrasive and polishing agents than others.
If you have relatively white teeth, try to use ones with lower abrasive effects, as it could damage tooth enamel.
2. Choose the right toothbrush:
A soft-bristled brush is recommended as the best type of brush for removing plaque from teeth. Also, brushes with small heads are preferable as they can reach into the hard-to-reach areas.
3. Toothbrush care:
Use your own toothbrush and keep it in a dry place. Toothbrushes should be replaced when they begin to show wear or every three months.
4. When brushing:
Hold the brush gently at a 45-degree-angle against the gum line. Use short brushing motions to clean the outside, inside and chewing surfaces of teeth.
5. Use floss:
Floss is effective for taking out food scraps from between the teeth. Using careful back-and-forth motions, insert the floss between teeth to the gum line. Gently slide it up and down the side of each tooth.
6. Using electronic toothbrushes:
Although an electronic toothbrush is quite expensive, it does a better job of cleaning. Replace the brush head every three to six months or when the brush begins to show wear.
7. Visit your dentist regularly:
Dr. Jung recommends getting a full scaling at the dentist two to three times a year. ``In the United States and other countries, getting the teeth cleaned professionally is quite normal. But in Korea, this is still an uncommon thing,'' he said.
8. Foods to avoid: Experts say sticky foods and foods that are high in sugar should be avoided. Such foods as rice cake and caramel, stick to the surface of the teeth, and can cause decay. Snacking between meals should be avoided.
