The National Library for Children and Young Adults is holding an exhibition of Australian illustrations through Jan. 29 in collaboration with the Australia-Korea Foundation under the Australian Embassy.

Titled “Hello from Australia” it features some 40 illustrations including major works of world-renowned authors Ann James and Ron Brooks and related picture books which were presented to the 2012 Bologna Children’s Book Fair. James, one of the founders of Books Illustrated, planned the exhibition. Her vividly detailed book illustrations mixed with wit and humor and using various drawing methods such as pen, ink, charcoal and water colors are on show.

The exhibition includes James’ representative work “It’s a Mirocool!” Jan Ormerod’s “Shake a Leg,” Freya Blackwood’s “Look, a Book!” Wayne Harris’ “Edge of the World,” Dean Bown’s “A Song for Lorkie,” Bruce Whatley and Ben Smith Whatley’s “Zoobots,” Stephen Michael King’s “A Bear and a Tree,” Norma MacDonald’s “Stolen Girl,” Aaron Hill’s “Damon,”Aaron Blabey’s “The Ghost of Miss Annabel Spoon,” and Bronwyn Bancroft’s “Kangaroo and Crocodile.”

Works illustrated by Alison Lester and Boori Monty Pryor who are noted for portraying Australian journeys and the stories of aboriginals are also on show.

“The Lost Thing” by Shaun Tan who won Best Animated Short Film at the 2011 Academy Awards is being screened as well. It is a humorous story revolving around a boy who discovers a bizarre-looking creature while collecting bottles at a beach.

“As the winter vacation for children is coming, the exhibition will be a good opportunity for them to enjoy unique Australian culture and learn creativity through the beautiful illustrations,” said library official Ahn Seung-moon.
