From June 9 to July 1, Donhwamun Traditional Theater will conduct performances of renowned traditional Korean musicians every Friday and Saturday.

The performances will feature 15 musicians and musical groups specializing in various genres of traditional Korean music. Through the performances, Donhwamun Traditional Theater offers a chance for its audiences to appreciate the true beauty of traditional Korean music.

‘Saturday Performance of Korean Music & Dance'

National Gugak Center

Throughout 2017

Every Saturday, Korean music and dance performances will be presented at the National Gugak Center.

For over 30 years, the National Gugak Center has provided audiences with traditional music and dance performances every Saturday. This year, the center aims to present a more profound level of traditional Korean performing arts, through programs such as "Listening to Traditional Korean Music in Depth" and "Traditional Korean Singing and Dancing Performance for the Enthusiasts." In addition, starting this year, the performances will be staged at the newly renovated Umyeondang Theater, which is designed to convey traditional sounds to audiences without using any speakers or microphones.

‘A Joy of Spring: Scenery, Blossom and Delicacy'

National Folk Museum of Korea

Through June 20

Celebrating the upcoming PyeongChang Winter Olympics, an exhibition featuring the nature and food of Gangwon Province will be held at the National Folk Museum of Korea.

This exhibition consists of three sections. The first section, "Scenery," presents diverse artworks and photographs that portray the mountains of Gangwon Province. The second section, "Blossom," features modern paintings and craftworks related to the wildflowers in Gangwon Province, as well as numerous artifacts used in spring picnics. In the last section, "Delicacy," the regional food of Gangwon Province will be exhibited.

‘Namdaemun Market'

Seoul Museum of History

Through July 2

Celebrating the 120th anniversary of the establishment of Namdaemun Market, Seoul Museum of History is displaying a special exhibition through July 2.

Since its opening in 1897, Namdaemun Market has successfully played the role of the central market of Seoul. This exhibition offers a chance to look back on the 120 years of the market's history, by presenting 120 items that were sold there in chronological order. The exhibition also includes a miniature model of the market as well as 27 videos that show the market's past and present.

‘Plaques of Gyeongungung, Palace of the Korean Empire’

National Palace Museum of Korea

Plaques of Gyeongungung, the main palace of the Korean Empire, will be exhibited at the National Palace Museum of Korea through July 2.

Since 1897, when Gyeongungung was selected as the main palace of the Korean Empire, the palace went through renovations and extension to be equipped with glamour and dignity. However, the palace was heavily destroyed during the Japanese colonial period, and only the plaques at the disappeared buildings remain today. The plaques tell the tragedies of Korea’s modern history as well as the efforts of Koreans who stood up against imperialism.

‘Roads of Arabia: The Archeological Treasures of Saudi Arabia'

National Museum of Korea

In collaboration with Saudi Commission for Tourism & National Heritage, the National Museum of Korea presents archeological treasures of Saudi Arabia from May 9 to Aug. 27.

This exhibition features 466 artifacts including a human-shaped stone sculpture created in 4,000 B.C. and a huge door that once decorated Kaaba, an important Islamic shrine. Through the artifacts, visitors will learn about the long history of Arabia that ranges from prehistoric times to the foundation of Saudi Arabia in the 20th century.

‘Jung Do Jun: Stroke & Structure'

The Seoul Calligraphy Art Museum presents works of contemporary calligrapher Jung Do Jun through June 11.

Jung Do Jun is known for his unique style of combining pictorial representations of Chinese characters with hangeul calligraphy. The exhibition includes his major works, such as "Sky, Land and Human," "Love" and "Rainbow," as well as various new works. The purpose of this event is to offer a vision for the future of contemporary calligraphy. The event also provides an opportunity to observe the philosophy within calligraphy and its relevance to contemporary social issues.

MRA 2017

Sangam Nuri Dream Square

Sangam Nuri Dream Square will display a special exhibition on cultural contents that utilize virtual and mixed reality, titled MRA (Mixed Reality Adventure) 2017.

Mixed reality refers to a new technology that interwinds virtual reality and the real world. MRA 2017 will exhibit 60 pieces of media art created with virtual and mixed reality. The event will provide the audiences with a chance to experience cutting-edge technologies in the form of art and video games.

‘Korean Contemporary Art Series Ⅱ _ Painting of Companion Communication'

Sejong Museum of Art

Korean contemporary artwork on the theme of house plants and pets will be presented under the title, "Painting of Companion Communication" at the Sejong Museum of Art.

According to Statistics Korea, more than 10 million Koreans have pets, showing the growing interest in pets in Korean society. Reflecting this trend, Sejong Museum of Art presents around 100 works of art by 40 contemporary artists, which emphasize the significance of plants and animals as companions of humans. The exhibition includes digital media art by Kwon Du-yeong, paintings of Jeong Woo-jae and prints by Lee Yun-yeop.

‘PIXAR: 30 Years of Animation'

Dongdaemun Design Plaza

Dongdaemun Design Plaza is displaying the special exhibition "PIXAR: 30 Years of Animation" through Aug. 8.

This exhibition features 450 pieces of art by Pixar artists, including drawings, paintings and 3D character models. The exhibition consists of three sections: Character, Story and World. Each section presents how the characters, stories, and settings of the Pixar animations are created.

‘Samramansang: from Kim Whanki to Yang Fudong'

National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Seoul

Under the title of "Samramansang," MMCA Seoul presents artworks it has recently acquired over the last four years.

From 2013 to 2016, the MMCA has obtained 932 pieces of artwork, and 130 of them will be displayed in this exhibit. The selection ranges from works by late modern artists to those created by young artists of the 21st century.

‘Jacques Henri Lartigue: La Belle France!'

As part of its "Masters of the 20th Century" series, KT&G Sangsang Madang Gallery presents works of French photographer Jacques Henri Lartigue through Aug. 15.

Jacques Henri Lartigue began to receive international attention in 1963, when his works were exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art, New York. As shown in the exhibition's title, "La Belle France" (The Beautiful France), the exhibit presents his photographs and vintage prints that portray the beautiful scenery of France, and everyday life of the French upper class.

‘The Selby House'

Daelim Museum

Through Oct. 29

Works of American photographer Toad Selby will be exhibited at the Daelim Museum under the title of "The Selby House."

Selby has portrayed unique, creative, and independent lifestyles of numerous artists and creators from different fields, from Karl Lagerfeld, the head designer of Chanel, to Eric Werner and Maya Henry, who run a restaurant deep in the jungles of Mexico. Around 400 of his photographs, illustrations and videos will be presented in this exhibition.

A musical based on the story of famous children's book author and illustrator Anthony Browne will be presented at the Shinhan Card FAN Hall until July 7.

Anthony Browne is one of the most popular children's book authors in the world. This is the first musical based on his story. The musical invites audiences to actively participate in the story and interact with the actors on stage.

Toby is a little boy who loves to spend time with his father. One day, however, his father suddenly disappears. Searching for his father, Toby enters the world inside a mirror with his stuffed chimpanzee Willy, which is a gift from his father.
