‘YOULL’

Jeongdong Theater

“YOULL,” a dance performance mixed with drama, will be staged at Jeongdong Theater until the end of 2016.

The performance will bring a wide range of traditional modes of expression together, including Korean dance, theater, music and martial arts. By applying the heroic fantasy genre to this production, Jeongdong Theater hopes to broaden its popular appeal. Actors Jeon Jin-hong, Lee Hyuk, Park Ji-yeon and Cho Haneul will play the main roles.

Music Travel of the King Sejong

“Music Travel of the King Sejong” will be staged at Sejoing Grand Theater on Saturday, May 14. Under the theme of the wise King Sejong, Seoul Metropolitan Traditional Music Orchestra will perform a “story-concert.” The show will not only let the audience encounter Korean history in an easy and interesting way but also enjoy the traditional music laid out in a less difficult manner.

The orchestra has been putting enormous efforts in transforming and popularizing traditional music. In cooperation with the Sejong Center, it has developed a number of string music pieces that are modern yet have a basis in traditional music ― these will be presented in this upcoming concert.

Three Jewels: Buddhist Art of Korea

Hoam Art Museum is holding a special exhibition “Three Jewels: Buddhist Art of Korea,” presenting the characteristics and significance of Korean Buddhist art. For centuries, Buddhist art pieces have not only served as objects of worship but also exemplified the aesthetics of their respective periods. This exhibition will highlight art pieces related to the “three jewels” of Buddism ― Buddha, Dharma and Sangha.

Consisting of three sections, the first will present paintings, sculptures and crafts related to Shakyamuni and Amitabha Buddha, the two central figures of Korean Buddhist faith. The next section will feature printed transcriptions of Buddhist texts and the third will display ritual implements related to Sangha.

MMCA Gwacheon is holding the Korean Contemporary Artist Series in photography until June 6, featuring Yook Myoung-shim.

This exhibition will provide a foundation for research and development in Korean contemporary art history. It highlights the art world of veteran photographer Yook, introducing 30 pieces from his early years that have never been presented. A total of 190 works are exhibited.

‘Let’s Do It Together’

National Hangeul Museum will hold “Let’s Do It Together: Learning Society through Hangeul Textbooks” exhibition, presenting a collection of Korean language textbooks. By introducing elementary textbooks from the late 1940s to today, this exhibition aims to explain the foundation of Korean language education.

The Museum has been showcasing the history and value of Korean orthography, one of Korea’s most-valued cultural assets. Through ‘Let’s Do It Together’ exhibition, National Hangeul Museum hopes to display a comprehensive presentation on the education of the Korean language.

Art Spectrum 2016

Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art has prepared a special exhibition titled Art Spectrum 2016, featuring 10 artists.

Art Spectrum is a biennial exhibition that aims to discover and promote emerging artists working in Korea, celebrating its sixth edition this year. A selection committee of Leeum’s contemporary art curators as well as critics and curators from outside the institution have worked together to select the 10 artists whose works represent the current state of contemporary art in Korea. Visitors will be able to enjoy the innovative and resolute efforts of rising young artists.

Seoul Elegy

Seoul Museum of History

Celebrating the 130th anniversary of France-Korea diplomatic relations, Seoul Museum of History is holding a special exhibition that shows 120 photos of Seoul taken by French photographer Francoise Huguier.

Huguier first visited and photographed Seoul in 1982. She experienced a city in the process of construction which still had a curfew, a remnant of the war. Old neighborhoods were being destroyed and replaced with concrete blocks, and the metro was then considered a brand new technology. The city as a whole was a big construction site and Seoul inhabitants’ standard of living was comparable to the rest of Asia. When she came back in 2014, Huguier discovered a new world transformed by technology and mass consumption. Her exhibition includes photos of Seoul she took in 1982 and 2014.

Cho Sung-mook

The MMCA will hold the exhibition “Cho Sung-mook in Taste of Style” at its Gwacheon branch until June 6.

As the 13th exhibition of the MMCA Contemporary Artist Series, the exhibition sheds light on veteran artists who have made distinct marks on the history of Korean contemporary art. Veteran sculptor Cho Sung-mook is considered a major artist as he constructed his own unique formative world while keeping his distance from popular trends.

Jean Paul Gaultier

Fashion Designer Jean Paul Gaultier’s works will be exhibited until June 30 at Dongdaemun Design Plaza.

Gaultier is a French haute couture with seven years of experience as the creative director of Hermes, and has designed countless costumes and outfits worn by celebrities around the world. The exhibition will feature more than 220 marvelously crafted garments along with other works of Gaultier, including stage costumes, sketches and photographs that will reveal his unconventional and playful designs.

Kim Hyung-dae Retrospective

“Kim Hyung-dae Retrospective” is the second exhibition of the MMCA’s Korean Contemporary Artists Series. Kim, as one of the pioneers of Korean contemporary art, won an award from the chairman of the Supreme Council for National Reconstruction for his “informal” style in 1961. Crossing over the border between paintings and printings, and tradition and modernism, Kim has established his unique formative language depicting Korean society. The exhibition will give a chance to explore his significant works over the last 5 decades including the series “Growth,” “Creation,” “Image,” and “Halo.”

Seoul Arts Center’s Hangaram Design Museum will exhibit over 150 art pieces by Frida Kahlo, a revolutionary artist who focused on inner agony, and Diego Rivera, one of the leading members of the Mexican Muralist movement, from May 28 to August 28. All exhibits of the two artists are brought from Museo Dolores Olmedo in Mexico to provide an opportunity for Korean audiences to experience their holistic life and art.

Since the 1950s, the Korean photography scene had long been dominated by documentary and journalistic photography, rooted in realism. This exhibition directs attention to the development of the medium of photography in the history of Korean art, from realism-based public images in its beginnings to the conceptual expression and aesthetic language of individual photographers in the second half of the 1980s and onwards.

The Children's musical "Cloud Bread" as an open-ended run is staged at Art Center Tree and Water at Daehangno.
