The musical “Arranga” will be staged at Chungmu Art Hall from Feb. 14 to April 10.
Depicting a love story between a king and a commoner, the musical seeks to combine Western rhythms and Korean musical traditions — the musical numbers in Arrangga are a fusion of gugak. Kang Pil-suk and Yoon Hyung-ryul star as King Gaero, and Choi Joo-ri and Kim Da-hae play Arang.

‘The Song of Spring’

The Seoul Metropolitan Traditional Music Orchestra will present newly composed traditional music at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts.
As the first traditional music orchestra in Korea, they have been putting tremendous efforts into creating a transformation of traditional music and popularizing creative music. Under the theme of spring, they will introduce various new pieces composed by Kim Baek-chan, Park Kyung-hoon, Shin Yoon-su, Park Han-kyu and Kim Bo-hyun.

As part of the Hyundai Card Culture Project, an exhibition on Stanley Kubrick will be held at the Seoul Museum of Art until March 13.
Kubrick is one of the most influential directors in film history, famous for his innovative cinematography. The exhibition will display major cinematic devices, photographs, scripts, costumes and cameras used by the director during his lifetime of film production.

Philippe Garrel — A Dazzling Despair

MMCA Seoul is holding a retrospective exhibition of works by French director Philippe Garrel until Feb. 28.
The exhibition will select 13 pieces of Philippe Garrel’s works produced on 35mm film and screen them in digital video. The screening will feature Garrel’s early works such as “Actua 1” (1968), which was discovered after 47 years, as well as recent works such as “La Jalousie” and “In the Shadow of Women.” Philippe Garrel’s films depict modern images of human loneliness, sadness and vain desire in the most classical form.

Alessandro Mendini — The Poetry of Design

The Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) is exhibiting the works of Alessandro Mendini until Feb. 28.
Alessandro Mendini is a world-renowned designer and this exhibition is his first in East Asia. Under the direction of Mendini himself, 600 pieces will be displayed. Each piece has a story as if each artwork is a phrase from a greater poem. The hall is closed on Mondays. Tickets cost 8,000 to 14,000 won.

‘Picasso to Francis Bacon’

The exhibition consists of 100 artworks consisting of oil paintings, lithographs, and sculptures, from renowned artists, including 24 pieces from Picasso, 15 from Francis Bacon, 10 from Andy Warhol and nine from Marc Chagall. The British Museum — Human Image

Relics from the British Museum, one of the most prestigious in the world, are now in Korea. Varying from sculptures with a history of 10,000 years to world-famous paintings, a total of 167 artworks are presented at Hangaram Art Museum inside Seoul Arts Center.
Within its theme of “Human Image,” the exhibition welcomes people with two wooden statues in the first section to express “Ideal Beauty.” The following sections are: “Expressing the Person,” “The Body Divine,” “The Body Politic,” “The Body Transformed” and “Relationships.”

‘World of Mystery’
National Geographic is holding a “World of Mystery” exhibition to showcase stories from around the world at Seoul Arts Center.
In addition to National Geographic being well known for its articles on travel and history, the magazine is also recognized for its astonishing quality of photography. Its latest photo exhibition in Korea explores humanity and nature through the lens, displaying eye-catching images of this mysterious world of ours. “World of Mystery” is divided into six sections: History of National Geographic, Mystery of Ancient Civilization, Mystery of the Universe, Mystery of the Wild, Mystery of the Water World and Deep Sea Challenge Project.

William Kentridge — Peripheral Thinking

“Peripheral Thinking,” an exhibition that showcases works by world-renowned South African artist William Kentridge, is being held at MMCA Seoul until March 27 in Galleries 2, 3 and 4.
Kentridge began to receive attention in the international art arena in the early 1990s with a charcoal drawing animation on the subject of racial discrimination and violence under Apartheid. Held for the first time in Korea, his solo exhibition will present his representative works.
‘Rubens and Other Masters’

Liechtenstein Museum is bringing a collection of paintings, sculptures and engravings to the National Museum of Korea until April 10.
The museum will not only display the works of great artists but also provide an opportunity to understand the history and artistic culture of the 17th century. “Rubens and Other Masters” presents the works of the century, featuring “Portrait of Clara Serena Rubens” and Pieter Brueghel’s “Census at Bethlehem.”

Van Gogh Inside: Festival of Light and Music

An exhibition on Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh and other impressionist-inspired painters is being held at Cultural Station 284.
“Van Gogh Inside” will display more than 400 paintings, roughly half by Van Gogh and the rest by other painters including Claude Monet, Pierre Auguste Renoir and Edgar Degas. Some of the works of Van Gogh will be presented on a digital screen accompanied by music.

D Museum will hold a lighting art exhibition, “Spatial Illumination — 9 Lights in 9 Rooms” until May.
The exhibition stimulates the sensibility of space by exposing people to dispersed lights. The “9 rooms” are divided by individual themes. The lighting displays are enriched with music, movements and vibrant colors. Famous photographs by Herb Ritts will be exhibited from Feb. 5 to May 2 at Sejong Museum of Art.
Ritts is notable for his photographs of celebrities but is also known for his books on photography of fashion designers including Giorgio Armani, Channel, Gianni Versace, Cartier and Valentino. For “Herb Ritts Works,” more than 100 of his pieces are brought to Korea, including photos of Richard Gere, Elizabeth Taylor and Madonna. The exhibition also includes the legendary music videos he created.

‘Monet’s Impressionism Exhibition 2016’

The War Memorial of Korea will exhibit the works of Claude Monet until May 8.
Monet was a French artist from the 1800s to early 1900s and one of the creators of impressionism. He focused on the principle of light, exploring how the same subject looks different by changes of light. His works include “Women in the Garden,” “Impression, Sunrise,” “Haystacks, (Sunset)” and “Water Lilies.”

The MMCA will hold the exhibition “Cho Sung-mook in Taste of Style” at its Gwacheon branch until June 6.
As the 13th exhibition of the MMCA Contemporary Artist Series, the exhibition sheds light on veteran artists who have left distinct footsteps in the history of Korean contemporary art. Veteran sculptor Cho Sung-mook is considered a major artist as he constructed his own unique formative world while keeping his distance from popular trends.
