Korean-American artist to hold 'Gyoture' exhibit

Korean American artist Lim So-hyun opened her first art show on June 1 at Triangle in Itaewon, Seoul. Lim’s exhibition has some 10 pieces about Seoul that she created from both Korean and American perspectives.

As a Korean-American who grew up in an American culture but with an ethnic Korean background, she reflected her identity in the show. The artist used mixed icons from both cultures such as cartoon characters from Doraemon, Slam Dunk and Sailor Moon to mix-match the figures that come awkward but familiar at the same time. The exhibition name “Gyoture” is a portmanteau of “gyopo,” the Korean term for a Korean American, and “culture.”

Lim has been collaborating with celebrities such as JYP’s girl band Miss A member Min and Jay Park as well as fashion brand New Era. She mostly worked on logos, printings and album jackets of K-Pop artists.

The exhibition will take place until this Friday.
