Busan Mayor Park Heong-joon met with Joseph Yun, acting U.S. ambassador to Korea, on Wednesday to discuss ways to enhance cooperation and mutual development between Busan and the United States, the city government said Thursday.
The meeting took place at the Westin Josun Busan hotel and covered topics such as shipbuilding cooperation between Korea and the United States and the construction of the new Gadeok Island airport.
Yun, who previously served as U.S. ambassador to Malaysia and U.S. special representative for North Korea policy, assumed his current role in January under the Trump administration. He remarked that “Busan holds a key position on the Korean Peninsula” and expressed hope for deeper U.S.-Busan ties.
Park highlighted Busan’s vision of becoming a global hub city, focusing on five core areas: logistics, finance, new industries, cultural content and international tourism. He asked for continued U.S. interest and support.
“I believe Ambassador Yun’s extensive diplomatic experience will help further solidify Korea-U.S. cooperation and support Busan’s leap toward becoming a global hub,” Park said.
