South Korea and Cameroon on Wednesday signed an agreement aimed at strengthening their bilateral cooperation in the defense sector and the arms industry, Seoul's defense ministry said.

Acting Defense Minister Kim Seon-ho and Cameroonian Defense Minister Joseph Beti Assomo inked the agreement during their meeting held in Seoul, the ministry said.

It marked the first time that Seoul's defense ministry has signed such an agreement with an African nation.

Under the pact, both sides agreed to expand military education and exchange as well as seek ways to strengthen arms cooperation through Cameroon's bid to modernize its defense information system.

Kim introduced South Korean weapons systems, such as tactical vehicles and medium-sized utility helicopters, and stressed that South Korea could play a substantial role in establishing a stable information system for the Cameroonian defense ministry.

In the meeting, the defense chiefs concurred on the need for a clear and joint response by the international community to counter North Korea's persistent nuclear and missile provocations, according to the ministry. (Yonhap)
