The leader of the main opposition Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) on Wednesday emphasized the importance of efforts to deepen the alliance between Seoul and Washington as U.S. President Donald Trump began his second term.
DPK leader Lee Jae-myung made the remark during his meeting with acting U.S. Ambassador to Korea Joseph Yun at the National Assembly.
"We must strengthen the Korea-U.S. alliance and firmly uphold our shared responsibilities as part of the free democratic bloc," Lee said.
Lee expressed gratitude to Washington for its support in safeguarding Korea's democracy during a period of political instability following President Yoon Suk-yeol's short-lived martial law declaration on Dec. 3.
As the Trump administration prepares to implement new foreign policy initiatives, Lee voiced hope for closer collaboration between Seoul and Washington to promote global peace, ensure stability in Koreaeast Asia, and deepen bilateral relations.
Yun, in response, said he looks forward to working to advance the bilateral alliance and expressed optimism that Korea will overcome its political challenges and emerge stronger in the process. (Yonhap)
